The hype behind LED lights is understandable. They’re coming out with amazing new advancements every day, and they’re becoming more affordable to everyone. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, and basically, it is a semiconductor that produces light when an electric current is passed through it.

There are two types of LEDs: edge-emitting and surface-emitting. Surface-emitting LEDs are the most common ones being used today; they’re also known as “point source” and “edge-lit”. Edge-emitting LEDs are less expensive than surface-emitting LEDs and have a crisper color presentation, but they aren’t as bright.

These two types both come in different shapes: chips and panels. Chip LEDs are typically used for small applications like flashlights, cell phones, etc., while panel LEDs are commonly used for large applications like street lights, stadium lights, etc.

Edge-illuminated and surface-illuminated refer to the application of LEDs. Edge-illuminated uses less material than surface-illuminated because you don’t have to cover the edges of the board with something opaque in order to block out light that doesn’t shine through the actual surface of the diode chip (which is needed in surface illuminated).

LEDs are simply diodes that emit light. What makes them so great? First of all, they can be extremely small, which means they can be integrated into a piece of hardware or even into clothing or jewelry. Second, they’re better in every way than the other sources of lighting we have available today. Light-emitting diodes last longer and require less energy than incandescent bulbs. They’re also more durable, lasting more than 10 times as long as fluorescent bulbs and 50 times longer than halogen lights. Finally, LEDs are cheaper to make, making them easier for manufacturers to produce without having to sacrifice quality. All told, LEDs are poised to take the place of incandescent bulbs in our homes over the next decade.

There are two major advantages to LEDs.

First, they use about 50% less energy than traditional light bulbs. That might not seem like much, but when you’re using the same amount of power to produce the same amount of light, you’re already ahead of the game.

The second advantage is that LEDs last 10 times longer than other types of lighting. In addition to being more convenient in terms of bulb changing, it also means that an LED light will pay for itself over its lifetime in energy and replacement costs.

LEDs have been on the market for a while now and they are becoming more affordable as every year passes. While they aren’t quite at the point where we can expect everyone to have them replacing all their old incandescent and CFL lights any time soon, they are definitely on their way to becoming the standard light bulb for households everywhere.

Benefits of LED:

Designed to last up to 50,000 hours, LED light bulbs are a cost-effective and eco-friendly choice for any homeowner. As the average life expectancy of an LED light bulb is longer than that of a traditional incandescent or CFL bulb, it is a more cost-effective choice as well.

LEDs can come in many shapes and sizes, including bulbs for recessed lighting, outdoor floodlights and spotlights. Composed of an array of chips, each with its own job to do, LEDs are able to produce a high amount of light while using very little power. LEDs are also incredibly efficient; they convert 90% of their energy into light, while incandescent bulbs only convert 10%. LED Lights have become popular alternatives to traditional light bulb models because they save energy, but may also save you money on your energy bill as well.

Using less energy means using less electricity and paying less on your electric bill every month. This can really add up in the long run as you replace all your old incandescent bulbs with new LED ones. If you’re interested in finding out if LEDs would be a good fit for your home, be sure to speak with an electrician about how many you’d need for what areas.

Light bulbs are usually something we barely give a second thought to — after all, they’re in practically every room of the house and most people don’t really notice them until they don’t work. But believe it or not, light bulbs have been a point of discussion in homes since they were first introduced — people argued whether they offered any benefits over gas lighting or candles and whether they could really survive forever. Here’s the thing: they can! It’s true that these days, the light bulb doesn’t get as much attention as it used to. In fact, some people have become a little blasé about incandescent bulbs — the kind often found in wall lamps and ceiling lights — but maybe that’s because we just assume it works until it stops working.

When you look at all the things that LEDs do better than incandescents (and even CFLs), you might be convinced to swap out your old bulbs for new ones:

LEDs are more energy efficient than other light bulbs. Incandescent lights’ biggest downfall is their low energy efficiency — only 10–15% of the energy used to power them goes into creating light; the rest is lost as heat. They also contain mercury which is harmful to the environment if disposed of improperly.
